A TEENAGER'S VIEWS
For the Record
By Ian Smith
Vancouver Province Sept. 6, 1957
Found anyone yet who enjoyed Elvis Presley when he dazzled Empire stadium last Saturday?  Well, hang onto your Elvis buttons and read on --- here's somebody who enjoyed The Shaker thoroughly.
I must admit I went into the stadium prejudiced against the Pelvis.  I wanted to write against him.  It has been the fad for the last two years to write against the man from Memphis and I wasn't going to be the one to start a new trend of thought.  Besides, it's much easier to knock something than it is to praise it.
Descriptive phrases were rattling around my head as we fought out way into the stands past the elbowing, pushing, oh-so-pro-Elvis crowd.  "There's nothing wrong with Elvis that a couple of bottles of tranquilizing pills wouldn't cure."  "Why come to scream at Elvis when you can break his records at home just as easily?"  "If Elvis was on wheels, all that wiggling could have rolled him clear back to Memphis --- and maybe it would have been better."
As I said, I was fairly bursting with knock-'em-down-phrases, unfortunately, I was never to enjoy using them.  I came out of that stadium so full of good feeling for the side-burned millionaire that it almost hurt.
And don't ask me why, because I don't know myself.
We didn't get to talk to him because we arrived too late for the press conference.  We could barely discern his sideburns from our seats far down the 50-yard line.  We could hardly hear him sing when the screams washed over him in great waves, and at other times his voice was so loud it almost hurt our ears.  And Elvis looked no different from anybody else in the building; everybody there, it seemed, was squirming and flopping in the true Presley tradition.
But still he impressed.  He impressed when he opened with "Heartbreak Hotel," and he impressed when he closed with "Hound Dog."
Most of all, he impressed when he let loose with a new one, "Fool's Hall of Fame" --- and it should be big if he ever makes a record of the song.
LISTENING IN:  Will Fool's Hall of Fame go if it's released on a single?  The guess in this corner is that it could do very well.

REDS RECORD RACK

Test Coming Up
For Elvis Presley

by Red Robinson
Vancouver Sun Sept. 6, 1957

"Mr. Sideburns" has come and gone and there seems to be a mixed reaction to the show.
In this column I don't wish to tread over the line of controversy.  If you liked the show that's fine . . . if you didn't like the show that's fine.
Elvis told me backstage that he has a new song coming out on RCA-Victor.  The song is called Fools' Hall of Fame.  The wonderful Jordanaires back him up once more on this southern rhythm rocker.  The record is currently available by another artist, Rudy Richardson.
Elvis smiled broadly when he announced his new show.  He said, "Red, boy, don't miss my new show, Jailhouse Rock.  I've got some terrific new songs coming out from the show."
Elvis mentioned only the title song itself, Jailhouse Rock.  I imagine that this is the only song he's allowed to release at this time because there may be changes before the movie is completed.  There will be four songs released on an extended play from the soundtrack of the show.
Elvis's Fools Hall of Fame is a song to watch because if he is on the wane, as some people claim, the sales of the new record will indicate it.
Watch this new song when it comes your way!
