TV DJS DUMPING
ELVIS OVERBOARD

ONE TV SHOW
JUST FOR TEENERS

Vancouver Sun  Nov. 29/57
The latest musical survey taken by Billboard magazine has turned up some startling facts that should be called to the attention of the general public.
If you're fed up to the teeth with rock and roll music, mediocre talent and over-promotion of hit parade tunes, relief may soon be on its way.
The poll shows that close to 90 per cent of all the disc jockeys are not playing the music they prefer.  In fact, if the jocks themselves had full sway, their personal preferences indicate that the radio audiences would get a much higher degree of ballads, slick instrumentals, dance bands and jazz.
Comments gleamed [sic] from this year's crop of poll questionnaires indicate considerable straining on the part of the disc jockeys to free themselves from "the rock and roll straightjacket."
Spinner after spinner wrote gleefully that his station was de-emphasizing teen favorites in favor of ballads, standard and particularly album material.

NEW YORK (BUP) -- Teenagers make or break a pop record.
But strangely enough, although TV trots out a bushel of musical shows each week, only one is pitched right at the saddle shoes set, "AMERICAN BANDSTAND."
ABC-TV, which launched the show on its network in August, beams it to 74 of its stations for 90 minutes each afternoon, Monday through Friday.

RED'S RECORD RACK
Good or Bad, Let's Hear  Presley's Christmas Album
by Red Robinson
Vancouver Sun Nov. 29 1957

A Calgary radio station this week banned Elvis Presley's Christmas album.
This, of course, is the album we mentioned last week.
The album was described by the Calgary radio station as "one of the most degrading things we have heard."
This brings back memories of other commercialized Christmas songs like Eartha Kitt's "Santa Baby."  All the talk helped sell over two million copies of this particular record.
The new Presley album is a very controversial item.  Some people think it's proof that Elvis can do something besides rock songs.
When an entertainer reaches the peak that Elvis has reached, it's only natural that his songs and his everyday actions come under public discussion.
I am not going to defend or knock this particular album.  I still believe that it should be played, and if it is as bad as some people say it is, then the complaints will light up the switchboards of every radio station in Canada and action will be taken by various station managers.  If a song is bad the public will take direct measures to tell you.  But it's not up to certain individuals to dictate what is good or bad.

Pat Boone, contender for the top vocalist of 1957, was on hand for the gala premiere last week at the Roxy of his second motion picture, "April Love."  It was one of the biggest premieres ever staged in New York.
The show will be in Vancouver for the Christmas season.  In conjunction with this movie DOT has released an album of songs from "April Love."  Besides having a big contract with Twentieth Century Fox, Pat has his own television show.

Politics and music seem to go together these days.  Every time there's a major happening on the world scene some recording artist capitalizes on it.
Recently a gal called Carole Burnette recorded "Made a Fool of Myself Over John Foster Dulles."
Since sputnik was launched many labels have used the satellite for commercial purposes.  A week after Sputnik I was launched out came a record by "Bobby and the Satellites."
