*--Denotes
new entries to the Soundathon this year.
|
Soundathon # 5 was printed in the Vancouver
Province over a three day period in late December
1962. (The first installment was incorrectly
headlined as Soundathon #1.) Below are the three
articles that accompanied each installment over
the three days.

Salute
hit records of past

225,000
votes pile up in poll

Al Jordan and Ronn Grimster

What
is a soundathon? The world itself indicates a
composite of two things -- music or sound, and
length. It is basically a marathon of music but a
special marathon. Soundathon is a major event each
year on C-FUN. It salutes the major recordings of
the past and spans 63 hours of programming.
The concept came
from the overwhelming demand by the public for
memory tunes or flashbacks. The young adults of
today have become nostalgic for the songs that
were big during their teenage years. The
increasing popularity of flashbacks indicated to
us that a massive programming concept was needed
to supply these people with the music they
demanded.
Thus, Soundathon was
created and is featured exclusively on C-FUN twice
a year, once in the summer and of course the big
feature just before the new year. Be sure to hear
the whole thing. It's the biggest holiday music
treat in town. Soundathon begins this Saturday
morning at nine. . .and runs continuously until 12
midnight New Year's Eve.
Al Jordan and Ronn
Grimster will compare this year's Soundathon with
last year's in The Province Thursday. The survey
is coming your way in three parts this year and
you can read the stories by the good guys and see
the top Soundathon hits this week in The Province.
|
|
This is Soundathon No.
5. The first was held during the final hours of
1960 -- the second during the summer of 1961 --
No. 3 during the final hours of 1961. Last summer
(1962) it was Soundathon No. 4. Now Soundathon No.
5 is about to be unveiled before your ears on
1410. It happens Saturday, Dec. 29 at 9 a.m.
Last year the
Soundathon 300 was compiled from 101,000 votes.
This year a total of 225,000 votes were counted by
teams of people under the directions of the C-FUN
Good Guys. Letters containing votes arrived from
all over the lower mainland, Vancouver Island the
Interior of the Province, as well as Washington
State and our neighboring province Alberta.
When the final
portion of the C-FUN Soundathon 300 is printed in
the PROVINCE tomorrow, you will find by comparing
last years 300, that there are 111 new entries.
The Top Ten alone contains five changes. These
changes come about by realizing the new releases
each year and the fact that many records that were
popular in years gone by, quite often come back
Tomorrow. . . look
for Frosty Forst with the final 100 records in
tomorrow's Province.

Soundathon
'62. . . about 24 hours away. . .and Western
Canada's most popular POPULAR MUSIC station
salutes the most responsive and appreciative
audience in broadcasting history with a
giant-round-the-clock presentation of the most
outstanding contemporary recorded songs. All the
great names -- the BIG STARS on C-FUN are brought
together to climax the productive days of 1962
(and on back into the 50's) and provide the
launching base for what promises to be the most
exciting and enjoyable year of programming on 1410
in '63.
There's ELVIS
PRESLEY, who in the final analysis, tallied more
than twice the ballots of his nearest rival--even
at that ROY ORBISON has firmly established (No. 2)
as one of the best recognized pop music identities
of the day. A significant tribute to the talent of
the late JOHNNY HORTON . . . his fans voted him
into overall third place!
Rounding out the big
winners in order, BOBBY VEE, the EVERLY BROTHERS,
