Dairy Queen Date - A Painting by Bruce Stewart
"Dairy Queen Date"
A painting by Bruce Stewart.

Bruce writes:  "The scene is Fraser at 47th Avenue in South Vancouver, May 1960. The neighbourhood's Fraser Theatre was playing "A Summer Place" and the kids were gathering at their own 'summer place' -- the nearby Dairy Queen to see and be seen; 'hardrockers' and 'squares' alike indulging in soft ice cream and strawberry sundaes.  Not to mention some 'car envy'.

"This is really a fantasy self-portrait - me on the back of an (imagined) T-Bird, with a girl from high school days whom I never really got to know.  The 'Bird I found in the back lane of my Kitsilano appartment and with my 'muse' became the focus of my vision: a place too soon lost to the inevitable realities to come."
